Sex offender back into the Qld community - Ninemsn

A sex offender will be released back into the community despite repeatedly cutting off his monitoring device and trying to rob an adult store.

Tyrone Speechley, 25, was first released under a seven-year supervision order in April 2010 after serving three years for sex offences.

He was then returned to jail twice in less than a year for cutting off his electronic monitoring device and breaking curfew.

Each time a Brisbane Supreme Court judge ordered he be released back into the community.

Speechley was then re-arrested for a third time in January last year for the attempted robbery of a sex store in Toowoomba.

He pleaded guilty to that offence and was sentenced to three years in jail with a parole release date of December 21, 2012.

Earlier this week Justice Debbie Mullins heard evidence about whether Speechley should again be released into the community under a supervision order.

The court heard evidence from two psychiatrists, who were concerned Speechley's risk of sexual reoffending was high if he used drugs or alcohol.

One psychiatrist said Speechley's demonstrated poor response to supervision did not bode well for any future compliance with curfews.

In her ruling this week, Justice Mullins found that Corrective Services officers would be able to mitigate any risk of drug and alcohol use that might lead to sexual offending.

She ordered he be released back into the community.
