TONY POWELL GAVIN Fletcher has staked his claim for victory in the Wild Desert All Stars Modified Production Sedan series following his fourth-round win on an enthralling night of action at Lucas Oil Lismore Speedway.
Fletcher entered the penultimate round at the Lismore track on Saturday night second in the standings.
A superb drive gave him victory and moved him into top spot with one round remaining.
The grand final will be held at Toowoomba's Charlton Raceway on March 2.
It was a clinical performance from Fletcher, who started from pole position in the 30-lap Lismore main event.
He was followed to the finish line by Aidan Raymont, who turned in one of the best drives of the night, and third-placed Greg Worling.
Raymont started out of position 12 and drove his way through the field before he made a late charge for victory.
There was little between front-runner Fletcher and Raymont in the final few laps.
The pair ran side-by-side in a sensational performance right to the chequered flag before Fletcher snared the win by a half-car length.
It was one of the best Modified Production Sedan races seen at Lismore in recent years.
The feature race action was punctuated by several cautions.
The first came 10 laps into the event after Darren White's car left debris on the track.
White had rolled his car in the last of the heats but it was repaired in time for the feature race.
At that point Worling led the event but was soon challenged by Fletcher, who raced to the lead with 18 laps remaining.
David Jacobi lost a wheel which brought on the yellow light at half distance.
Fletcher maintained his front running advantage, however it was Raymont who had the attention as he moved into fourth position.
Third-placed Jason Jolley, who shared the front row with Fletcher, lost all chance of victory when he hit the fence with 12 laps left to run.
Raymont moved into second spot after the restart and set up the grandstand finish as he closed in on Fletcher.
The enthralling battle captured the attention of the strong crowd before Fletcher held on for a narrow win.
Fletcher earlier had dominated the dash and heats.
Other main event winners on Saturday night were the in-form Ian O'Toole of Grafton in the Wingless Sprintcars, Brody King (Junior Sedans), Luke Gray (Street Stocks) and Trent Dhu (Fast Fours).
