FIRST SESSION: Toowoomba Clydesdales under 20s assistant coach Bob Costello and coach Scott Hart at training on Monday. Ben Drewe THE Toowoomba Clydesdales have started the long road to what they think needs to be their most successful FOGS Cup Colts Challenge season.
The Clydesdales under 20s held their first training session at St Mary's College on Monday night as they prepare for their third season in the colts competition.
There has been a high level of player turnover in the off-season as players get older and Clydesdales coach Scott Hart was optimistic about the potential of his squad.
"I was pretty impressed with them," he said. "There were some really strong boys in there.
"We're quietly confident we'll put together a pretty good side."
Hart knows given it is the third year in the colts competition for the Clydesdales, they need to push for the finals in 2014.
"We need to succeed this year, we really do," he said.
"This is our third year in and while last year had its highs and lows, this year we're looking to go better.
"There are fresh faces and they're excited. There is a group of 17, 18 year olds that are just jumping out of their skin. All they want to do is play 20s which is a good culture."
The foundations for a successful season are beginning to be laid, with coaching staff keen to see the players bulk up before Christmas.
"The next six weeks is about strength and conditioning and then we'll work on agility, and then after Christmas we'll get in and work a bit harder on our endurance stuff," Hart said.
Michael Krog and Mark Morgan will handle much of the strength and conditioning work with the Clydesdales 20s and they will have a busy time in the lead-up to Christmas.
