THE business dealings of a former University of New England chancellor are being examined by the New South Wales anti-corruption body.

An inquiry into UNE former chancellor John Cassidy's involvement in the sale of a university owned Tattersalls Hotel to his business associate Darrell Hendry, began on Monday.

The ICAC hearing's Counsel assisting Anna Mitchelmore alleged Mr Cassidy had tipped Mr Hendry off to the sale.

It was further alleged Mr Cassidy had contacted Mr Hendry in 2005 before the sale, encouraging him to buy the hotel through their joint company, Vercot.

Mr Cassidy is expected to take the stand later this week.
