Protestors unite in fight against Toowoomba pollies - Toowoomba Chronicle

A NEW league of dissatisfied Toowoomba voters is on the verge of banding together separate community action groups into a unified voice.

Already three groups have signed on to the Toowoomba Alliance and several more are in talks.

The Friends of the Toowoomba Range, the Toowoomba Community Engagement Group and the East Creek Park Defenders have all enlisted.

ECPD spokesman Rod May has become the unofficial mouthpiece of the new alliance, at least until a final structure has been decided.

He warned Toowoomba Regional Council and state members the group would not be brushed off as has happened to separate protest groups.

The East Creek Park Defenders garnered 9000 signatures in its so-far failed bid to stop council converting two city parks into detention basins.

"Why would they just ignore 9000 voters? enough to put councillors or a member of parliament out of government," Mr May said.

"I have never seen in Toowoomba, which is a very conservative city, so much objection. So many people are against so many council decisions and the tide is coming in."

Mr May estimated the Toowoomba Alliance would swell to include eight or nine different protest groups, before being opened to the public.

Each of the separate groups will continue to exist as separate entities.

But their combined clout on issues where interests are shared or overlap will be a bargaining chip politicians should not take lightly.

"There are no political alliances in this group," Mr May said.

"I've got no aspirations to run for council or mayor, but if they keep going in the same direction our association will stay around to let voters know exactly what they've done at the next election.

"I'm not just talking about local government.

I'm also talking about the state."
