TOOWOOMBA'S growing reputation as a competition cycling Mecca has received another significant boost, with mountain biking set to join the spotlight.

The city will host five new mountain bike events over the next three years, including the Oceania Mountain Bike (MTB) Championships in 2015 and 2017.

Confirmation yesterday of Toowoomba's latest cycling addition is seen as a major coup for the sport and South-East Queensland tourism.

Toowoomba hosts the only National Road Series team cycling event in Queensland each May, and is also home to one of Australia's most modern criterium tracks.

The region also hosted last year's Oceania road cycling titles.

Tourism and Major Events Minister Jann Stuckey said the Oceania championships promise to bring a huge rider and support contingent to the region.

"The first event will see more than 400 riders and media converge on Toowoomba for the Oceania MTB Championships from March 26-29 in 2015," Stuckey said.

Mountain Bike Australia president Russ Baker was in Toowoomba yesterday for the championship announcement.

"Mountain bike racing is a very young sport," Baker said.

"It's a great sport for kids, and we hope to develop these riders into future international stars.

"Toowoomba's Jared Graves is amongst the world's leading mountain bike riders, and is a fantastic ambassador for the sport in this region.

"We look forward to being here in March next year."
