TOOWOOMBA'S Ben Gersekowski remains in strong contention for this year's Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship after gaining ground on front-runner Simon Hodge at Queensland Raceway last weekend.
Second-placed Gersekowski closed to within 13 points of the championship lead with three rounds remaining, following two race wins and a second placing in his McDonald's Gilmour Racing car.
The 21-year-old won both sprint races before Hodge took the weekend's feature race victory after a lightning start to win the race to turn one.
The eight-round series moves to Phillip Island on September 19-21 before the Sydney Motorsport Park round.
The year finishes when Formula 3 cars make their debut on the Homebush street circuit as part of the V8 Supercar Sydney 500 weekend on December 5-7.
Little separates Gersekowski and Hodge on racetrack times, and Gersekowski remains confident of being able to reel in his Team BRM Mygale rival for a series win.
"We closed the gap from 15 to 13 last weekend, and every gain is important," Gersekowski said.
"My car was set up brilliantly by Gilmour Racing and I qualified second by four thousands of a second.
"I was able to get a great start to win race one, and then held on in tricky conditions to win race two after Simon pressured me all the way. Simon then got a good start in the feature race, while I had a bit of a wheel spin, and he got the win over me.
"Formula 3 really comes down to the start and getting track position.
"But we are on the pace, and with three rounds and nine races to go, it's going to be full on.
"Team BRM do a great job setting up their cars, and it's going to be tough trying to catch them, but I'm looking forward to the challenge.
"I'm really enjoying the series, and it might even come down to the last lap of the last race at Homebush."
