TOOWOOMBA Grammar School students made light work of a serious rainforest infestation.
Year 12 student Callum Scott put the call out to his Mackintosh House peers to get outdoors and do something proactive, and after some brainstorming, reached the decision to help the Friends of the Escarpment Parks Toowoomba group clear lantana from Redwood Park.
About 100 students with their parents yesterday helped clear the weed from about three hectares of land.
"It's a really good turnout," Callum said.
Mackintosh House master Brodie Bassingthwaighte was impressed by the dedication the students showed to the task.
"The school is very proactive in terms of its service and initiatives in the community," he said.
"We put the call out to the boys and they turned up today."
Hugh Krenske, of Friends of the Escarpment Parks Toowoomba, was thrilled at the work done by the student cohort.
"They have acted like slashers, clearing the lantana from the park so that when it shoots again, we can come back in with spray packs and poison it," he said.
"The rain stopped us from planting trees, but clearing the lantana is just as important because we can't plant trees until it has been cleared."
The lantana clearing was a registered National Tree Day event.
