TOOWOOMBA'S Professor Shahjahan Khan's work to promote cultural diversity in the region has been recognised during the Queensland Cultural Diversity Awards.

Prof Khan took home one of the night's most prestigious awards when he was named winner of the Cultural Diversity Ambassador category.

The USQ statistics professor is known for his work with the Islamic Society in Toowoomba as well as helping international students settle into their new community.

Prof Khan hoped the award would help people recognise the importance of understanding and accepting diverse cultures.

"It is a great achievement to be recognised for my work," Prof Khan said.

"When I first moved to Toowoomba 21 years ago, I saw a need in the community to help develop cultural understanding.

"It has paid off with a strong acceptance of diversity in the Toowoomba."

Currently Prof Khan is focused on his work with the Toowoomba Mosque.

"We are working with community groups to promote peace and happiness," he said.

"Toowoomba is a wonderful city and it is great to see its citizens so open to embracing different cultures."
