DARLING Downs City went undefeated at the South Queensland Open Championship at Gatton but were unable to come home with the Schaeffer Shield.

The Toowoomba team posted wins over Wide Bay and Darling Downs Country at Gatton's Cahill Park at the weekend.

South-East Queensland, made up of players from Ipswich and the Gold Coast, was too strong though as it also posted two wins from its two games to take out the carnival having picked up more bonus points.

Darling Downs City captain Shaun McCarthy would have preferred to have left Cahill Park with the Schaeffer Shield but was nevertheless happy with how his squad played.

"They (South-East) had two strong wins and we fell just short but I was happy to have two wins," McCarthy said.

City took on Wide Bay on Saturday and scored 6-202 from 50 overs, with Blake Anderson (57), Troy Gurski (43) and opener Dylan Shaw (41) in the runs.

James O'Donohue starred with the ball as he took 5-23 from 10 overs while Derek Nitschke finished off the tail returning figures of 4-27 from 10 overs as Wide Bay was rolled for 156.

Darling Downs City then downed Country rivals by four wickets on Sunday.

Ben Webster scored 75 not out as Country was bowled out for 199 with the second-last ball of their innings, with McCarthy taking 3-29.

City lost opener Jack Potter (14) to make the score 1-23 in its run chase before fellow opener Shaw (46) and No.3 Chris Hall (37) put on an 81-run partnership to leave the chase in good position.

The pair fell in quick succession before Balke Anderson (37) and Kris Glass (27 not out) scored the majority of the runs still required to win in the 48th over.

McCarthy praised the efforts of his players across the board.

"We played well as a team," he said. "I thought Dylan Shaw batted really well with two 40s and Blake Anderson as well. Jimmy, he bowled the house down on Saturday."
