St Vincent's welcomes new ED agreement - Toowoomba Chronicle

THE St Vincent's emergency department will continue to meet the growing Toowoomba community's needs thanks to a renewed contract.

Toowoomba Private Emergency Group directors Dr Peter Burrows and Dr Andrew Parkin yesterday made the contract signing official, a move which St Vincent's general manager Carl Yuile said was more than four years in the making.

"There's about 18,000 occasions in emergency every year," Mr Yuile said.

"This contract gives the community confidence that the emergency department will continue at St Vincent's and deliver sustainable emergency services."

The new contract was back-dated to October this year, but yesterday's official handover marked the end of the four-and-a-half years of negotiations.

Dr Burrows said the emergency group was pleased with the outcome of the negotiations and looked forward to bringing more permanent medical staff to Toowoomba as a result.

"We need to have a guarantee of longevity," he said.

"We need to be able to guarantee them (medical doctors) a job for years, not just months.

"We are very happy St Vincent's worked with us and are very happy now to have a contract that will work through for six years.

"Doctors and medical staff can now bring their families here (to Toowoomba) and be confident they will have a job."
