Toowoomba's reputation for cheap fuel fades - Toowoomba Chronicle

TOOWOOMBA has a reputation as one of the cheapest placed in Queensland to buy petrol - but it might not be the case any more.

Toowoomba started 2014 among the cheapest cities in Queensland to buy unleaded fuel, however, RACQ figures have shown its average petrol prices didn't have the same decline in recent months as much of Queensland.

In January, only Warwick had cheaper average petrol prices than Toowoomba, but by November Toowoomba's average monthly price was more than five cents per litre higher than Brisbane's average.

WHEN WE WERE THE CHEAPEST ... ALL THOSE YEARS AGO

While average prices across Queensland dropped sharply from July, Toowoomba's average prices declined more steadily.

RACQ spokeswoman Renee Smith said Toowoomba had lost its place as one of Queensland's fuel bargain spots.

"We've seen an increase in prices in Toowoomba, which used to be one of the cheapest places in Queensland to fill up with unleaded," she said.

"The average cost of ULP is 145.6cpl, which we deem to be too high.

"The cheapest ULP on offer in the area is currently 135.9cpl, so it is important motorists shop around in Toowoomba.

Ms Smith said prices across regional Queensland were too high and did not reflect the more than 30cpl wholesale oil price decrease.

However, Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association chief Nic Moulis, who represents mid-sized service stations, said margins were very dependent on individual locations.

"Margins are quite difficult to establish as the price on the boards, we'd hope for all our members, reflects the individual circumstances of that operator," he said.

"Around 130 cents of the price is the cost of refined fuel and tax. Another around 16 cents would then be to operate the commercial site.

"So that might mean an actual margin of just four to six cents."
