Icy blast: 30 years since it snowed in Toowoomba - Toowoomba Chronicle

A band of hardy snow enthusiasts turned up at Picnic Point on July 4, 1984, after snow fell throughout Toowoomba.

THIRTY years ago today, children in Toowoomba and in parts of the Darling Downs built snowmen and enjoyed snowball fights.

The snowfall - the first on the Darling Downs in nearly 24 years - came as temperatures fell to one degree about 1pm and an icy Antarctic blast swept across the region.

Snow fell at Thornton in the Lockyer Valley, Stanthorpe, Applethorpe and in the Toowoomba suburbs of Mount Kynoch, Highfields and Centenary Heights.

Media on the day reported "several factors had combined to bring the freezing upper temperatures to the coldest (they) could remember in about 30 years".

The upper atmosphere temperature was reported as being minus 34 degrees.
