INTERNET speeds for the bush have been doubled under an NBN upgrade.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy announced wholesale broadband speeds for rural and remote areas had doubled to 25 megabits per second for download and 5 mbps for upload.

An upgrade had always been planned and costed for fixed-wireless and long term satellite services, but Senator Conroy today confirmed the heightened speeds the upgrade would produce.

He called it a "quantum leap'' in speeds that would allow people to work from home like their city cousins, and use high-quality video-based health services and video call family and friends.

Governments go to war over NBN roll-out costs

Faster speeds will begin in June for 17,000 homes already hooked up to fixed-wireless in Geraldton and Armadale in WA, Toowoomba in Queensland, Tamworth in NSW and Ballarat in Victoria.

Around 500,000 remote homes, farms and businesses will eventually be hooked up to fixed-wireless or long term satellite services by the end of 2015.

Connection to the new speeds will cost the same wholesale price as in city areas, at $27 a month.

The rollout of the optical fibre network is scheduled for completion by 2021.
