Cairns teen among three people dead on a horror day on Queensland roads - Herald Sun

GRIEF-stricken family and friends are mourning the death of a Cairns teen killed in one of three separate fatal accidents on Queensland roads yesterday.

Shardai Doble, 15, was one of eight teenagers travelling in an allegedly stolen four-wheel drive when it flipped and rolled in a cane field near Walkamin.

Tributes for the Machans Beach teen were pouring in on social media last night.

"She was a lovely person, and a beloved cousin. My thoughts go out to her and her family," one read.

Another said: "RIP my darling girl, you didn't deserve any of this, nothing will ever be the same without you, feeling for your family."

Acting Inspector Chris Hodgman of Cairns police said the group had been involved in "high-risk" behaviour.

"It's always a tragedy when anyone is injured or killed in an accident, especially those young lives," he said.

It is believed the vehicle was northbound on the Kennedy Highway to Mareeba when the accident happened about 8.45am. Acting Insp Hodgman said the vehicle had been driving downhill on a straight section of road before it crossed to the opposite side and continued into the field.

Ms Doble was airlifted to Cairns but died in hospital, while two other girls, both 15, were flown to Townsville Hospital with head injuries.

The other patients, including the 17-year-old male driver, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at either Mareeba or Atherton hospitals.

All were released yesterday except the driver, who remains in a stable condition at Atherton, and all were being questioned by police.

In a separate accident a 21-year-old man died after his ute and a 4WD collided near Rockhampton about 4.30pm.

The accident was on the Rockhampton-Yeppoon Road at Ironpot.

The occupants of the other car were takent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

In the third accident, about two hours later, a 65-year-old woman died when her car and a truck collided at Cooyar, north of Toowoomba.
