TOUTED at the start of the season as TRL title contenders, Wattles coach Luke Duggan thinks his team will face the new premiership favourites on Saturday night.

Wattles travel to Gatton to meet the Hawks at Cahill Park on Saturday night in a mouth-watering round three Hutchinson Builders TRL Premiership encounter.

Gatton look like being one of the big improvers in the TRL, along with Wattles, and sent an ominous warning to rival clubs last Sunday when they comfortably dispatched 2012 grand finalists Souths 50-14 at Cahill Park.

Duggan revealed that result surprised him, with the Tigers overcoming Wattles in the opening round.

And while the Hawks managed to beat Souths, it was the manner in which they did that has Duggan looking at Gatton as the new benchmark.

"I was shocked that they beat Souths as big as they did. To beat Souths is a big enough statement in itself but to do it 50-14 is huge," he said.

"On the back of that, they'd almost have to be competition favourites."

Saturday night's Gatton versus Wattles clash pits two finals contenders against each other but excitement in the build up to the game has been reduced somewhat by the fact the Warriors will be missing a handful of key players.

Halves Matt and Ryan Duggan along with other team mates will be unavailable as they attend the wedding of well-known Toowoomba rugby league player Kim Phoenix.

Luke Duggan says it is unfortunate the game could not have been played on Sunday but knows it is a good opportunity for some of the club's B grade players to push for a spot in the top grade.
