LES Sherrington's camp think a world title shot could be just around the corner but first the Toowoomba-trained boxer wants to fight in front of his adopted home-town.

Sherrington's trainer-manager Brendon Smith issued a challenge to fight WBO world No.5 Gary O'Sullivan from Ireland and his camp is reportedly keen on a possible bout.

O'Sullivan first has a WBO international middleweight title fight against Joe Selkirk on April 13 so negotiations are on hold until after that bout.

Sherrington, the WBO world No.8 is keen for another fight immediately after beating Esteban Ponce in Townsville on March 15, and wants to tee up another bout before negotiations with O'Sullivan.

The Townsville-raised Gold Coast resident is keen to stage that fight in his training base of Toowoomba.

"Toowoomba is like a base now for me and I guess more people are getting to know me," he said. "The support I'm getting is unbelievable. I guess it's like my home-town in Townsville."

Smith says the possible lead-in fight will take place in late May or early June, with Rumours International or the University of Southern Queensland his preferred venues.

He also has a list of prospective opponents down to three, with an American, a Mexican and a Japanese fighter in the mix.

This fight would be to help best prepare for a possible bout against O'Sullivan, which Smith thinks could have world title fight ramifications.

"I believe on Les' movement and Gary O'Sullivan's - if he wins - they'll both be up higher in the ratings," Smith said.

"I believe this could be made for an interim world title or to be in the mandatory position to fight Peter Quillin from the USA, so we're really knocking on the door with it all now."
