TOOWOOMBA and the Lockyer Valley's roads will play host to one of Australian cycling's best-known riders next month.

Australian legend Robbie McEwen will join more than a dozen elite athletes and celebrities when he rides the Careflight Base to Base Cycle Challenge on May 13.

The event will see riders cycle from Careflight's Toowoomba hangar to Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast in a bid to raise money for Careflight.

McEwen is one of Australian cycling's leading lights having won the Tour de France sprinters' jersey three times before riding for the Australia Orica-Green Edge team.

He will be joined at the start line by the likes of Superbike world champion Troy Bayliss and Gold Coast Suns chief executive Travis Auld in what will be the second Careflight Base to Base Cycle Challenge.

"We went from having 10 elite riders in our inaugural event to more than 30 this year, showing just how wholeheartedly the tight-knit cycling community has embraced this new event," RACQ Careflight's Leanne Angel said.
