WILLOWBURN suffered its first loss of the season as South Toowoomba Hawks thwarted the Magpies' quest for a third-straight Winstanley Shield at Newtown on Tuesday night.
Hawks recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win over Willowburn in the Football Toowoomba mid-week cup final to take out the second piece of silverware on offer this season.
The result is the first loss of the year for Willowburn, who had won the President's Cup earlier in the year and the past two Winstanley Shield finals.
Defence shone in the final with it taking until the 85th minute before Hawks finally managed to break down Willbowburn to score what proved to be the winner.
Willowburn will now look to bounce back at Newtown this Sunday when the Magpies take on West Wanderers in league action. Hawks have the bye this weekend.
The final of the women's mid-week cup saw more goals scored as Premier team Gatton posted a 4-0 win over Division One outfit USQ to take out the Tom McVeigh Trophy.
USQ put up a good fight but were unable to keep pace with Gatton as the Redbacks netted goals to Kayla Smith, Tahlia Sudhaus, Jacinta Taylor and Emily Burrows to take out the trophy. Gatton now faces Highfields in the next round of Premier Women's action.
