Diversity makes Toowoomba resilient - Toowoomba Chronicle

TOOWOOMBA has been ranked in the top 11% of the country for having a diverse economy.

Regional Australia Institute's online ranking tool, Insight, put Toowoomba 64th out of 563 for having a diverse range of employment options.

RAI deputy chief Jack Archer said Toowoomba's strength in agriculture, timber and mineral resources helped make its economy diverse.

He said diversity made regions more resilient.

"It gives you options," he said.

"If you've only got one string to your bow, then you're very much tied to riding the ups and downs of that."

While Toowoomba scored some top rankings, Mr Archer said it was not about being the best region in the country.

He said all the themes under the rankings, including infrastructure, demography, innovation, labour force, institutions and business sophistication, were different.

"We want people to engage in diversity and look at other strengths and weaknesses in their areas," Mr Archer said. "That is much more important than who is the best and who is the worst.

"The ranking helps you understand where you sit relatively to others and what you do with that makes you the best or the worst."
